How nature teaches us sustainability
_
Forests still cover about 30 percent of the world’s land area, but trees are disappearing at an alarming rate.
We depend on the trees for various reasons, not only to absorb the carbon dioxide that we exhale but also the heat-trapping greenhouse gases that our human activities emit.
The beautiful cork oak and the careful manual harvest of it’s bark helps slow down the pace of climate change.
As the cork oak has the incredible ability to regenerate its bark after harvest, it becomes a naturally sustainable source of material, without it being cut down.
It takes about nine years for a stripped cork oak to grow out its bark after harvest and during the process of re-growing it absorbs, on average, 3 to 5 times more co2 than a non-harvested tree.
Added to this naturally sustainable harvesting process, oak woodlands have been used for centuries to produce cork and graze livestock, making them a true haven for the ecosystem and its wildlife.
Design and quality
Cork products are made from the highest quality Portuguese cork grains to ensure a beautiful finish and a solid durability. This focus on quality lets you use your products for many years to come.
In Portugal the bark is harvested every ninth year and the tree must be at least 25 years old before the first cork is harvested. The cork trees continues to live and can grow for hundreds of years. Almost 8% of Portugal is covered by cork forest and this forest is a heaven for wildlife and birds. Cork is harvested by hand using axes by skilled workers.
